The next elections for the Electoral College will be held in 2027.

Elections Electoral College

Every 4 years there are elections for the members of the Electoral College. These elections are held simultaneously with the Island Council elections. The last elections for the members of the Electoral College were held on March 15, 2023.

 

You can vote for the Electoral College if:

  • you are 18 years or older
  • you have Dutch nationality
  • you are registered as a resident of Bonaire
  • you are not excluded from voting rights

The Electoral College chooses the Senate

The Senate has 75 seats. The members of the Senate are elected every 4 years by:

  • the members of the Provincial States;
  • the members of the Electoral Colleges of Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius;
  • the members of the Electoral College for Dutch voters living abroad.

 

The Senate discusses proposals for new laws that have been passed in the House of Representatives. The Senate can approve or reject a proposal for a new law. These laws may also apply to Bonaire. What is decided in the Senate and the House of Representatives can therefore also have consequences for you. Therefore, it is important to vote.

Electoral College Bonaire

Bonaire has its own Electoral College, just like Saba and Sint Eustatius. Every 4 years, the residents of Bonaire vote for who will represent the island in the Electoral College. The sole task of the Electoral College is to vote on the members of the Senate. Members of the Electoral College do not have a role in carrying out the governance tasks of the Public Entity of Bonaire.

The Senate evaluates the House of Representatives

The House of Representatives can propose, amend, and approve new laws. The Senate evaluates the legislative proposals and can also reject them. This way, not all power rests with one chamber, and citizens have the opportunity to object to the legislative proposals.
